PRODUCT REVIEW:

How to Choose a Babycarrier

A babycarrier can be the best investment you make in parenting. When my first daughter was born, she proved to be a high needs baby and the sling I chose literally saved my sanity. Choosing a babycarrier can be overwhelming as it seems that there are so many options. In reality, there are just 4 types of slings/babycarriers:

Pouches – A pouch is a simple tube of fabric that doesn't need to be adjusted and folds up well in diaper bags. On the flip side, because of the lack of adjustability it is usually not possible to fit both parents in one size pouch. Pouches can be used for front carries and hip carries.

Ring Slings – Ring slings offer adjustability and versatility and are the staple of many babywearing wardrobes. Ring slings are a length of material that adjusts by pulling the material through the rings. Great for putting on quickly and snuggle holds. Ring slings can be used for front carries and hip carries.

Wraps – Wraps are long, shaped pieces of fabric that you wrap around your body. Slightly intimidating, wraps are the ultimate in babywearing comfort but have the highest learning curve of any carrier. Wraps can be used for front, back and hip carries.

Soft Structured Carriers – The dad favourite! Soft Structured Carriers consist of a rectangular body with straps coming off each corner that buckle or tie on. Soft Structured Carriers can be used for front and back carries (with some styles also usable on your hip).

How do you choose? It's best to try them on with someone who knows about babywearing helping you. It'll take a little bit of time and effort to get the right carrier for you but the years of rewards will be worth it!
