Hope for Heartburn

Shawn-YakimovichA common complaint during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy is heartburn, also known as gastroesophageal reflux. As the baby grows, it puts pressure on internal organs, including the stomach. Stomach acid is then forced upward through the opening of the stomach and into the throat, where is causes discomfort. The intensity of discomfort can range from annoying to debilitating, with severe pain and even vomiting. Thankfully, naturopathic medicine has a number of safe and effective treatments that can make the heartburn of pregnancy a soon-forgotten memory.

Diet

It is well established that certain foods can prevent the complete closing of the esophageal sphincter, which is the muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach. Fatty, deep fried foods, caffeine from coffee and tea, peppermint and tomatoes are the most common culprits, although some people may react to different foods. Avoiding the list of foods above is the first step if heartburn becomes an issue.

Herbal Medicine

A simple, safe and very effective herbal remedy is cold marshmallow tea. The root from the marshmallow plant (Althea officinalis) contains soothing compounds that coat the esophagus and relieve discomfort. Unlike treatments such as Tums which can neutralize stomach acid, marshmallow root relieves the symptoms without depleting vital stomach acid that is necessary for absorbing vital nutrients like protein, iron and vitamin B12. To make the tea, soak one teaspoon of dried marshmallow root in cold water for 8 hours (overnight). Strain and keep in a glass container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Take one tablespoon of tea as needed for discomfort. In my experience, this treatment has not only relieved the symptoms within days, but it prevented any further heartburn symptoms for the rest of the pregnancy.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can quickly relieve heartburn. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, heartburn, as well as morning sickness, is caused by rebellious Qi, which means that the Qi (energy) of the stomach organ flows upwards instead of downwards, resulting in reflux or vomiting. Relief can occur with just one treatment, and over time, can reduce the frequency and intensity of heartburn symptoms without the need for any internal remedies.

A comprehensive naturopathic approach utilizing diet changes, simple herbal medicine and acupuncture can bring swift, lasting relief for heartburn during pregnancy, no matter how severe. Talk to your naturopathic doctor today!
